The Dioscures diamonds weigh 26.35 and 26.37 carats respectively, and are remarkable for their exceptional purity. They were introduced in 2019 suspended on a necklace bearing the same name.
In 2019 Cartier presented a necklace that showcased two rare pear-shaped diamonds named the “Dioscures”. In Greek mythology, the name Dioscuri designates the divine twins Castor and Pollux, sons of Leda. The name emphasizes the twin nature of these two stones, which were cut from the same rough weighing more than 195 carats.
The stones are certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and boast a D color —the highest on the intensity scale—and an equally exceptional Internally Flawless (IF) purity. What’s more, the Dioscures belong to the prestigious Type IIa category, which accounts for only 1 to 2% of the diamonds analyzed by the GIA. These gems are distinguished by the purity of their chemical composition—since they contain no, or almost no, nitrogen, they boast an extraordinary degree of clarity.
The Dioscures diamonds rank among the Maison’s most beautiful stone pairings, achieving harmony both in their quality and in the almost identical proportions of their pear shapes, in the same vein as another exceptional pair presented by Cartier in 2004, the Tiger Tears.
To make the most of the Dioscures duo, they were mounted as pendants on a necklace formed by a series of pear-shaped and square diamonds that bring out their sparkle to best effect. The design epitomizes both the Maison’s style and consummate skill, paying tribute to a 1903 piece —now in the Cartier Collection—that depicts a wisteria branch in a stylized manner with a contemporary interpretation. The two gemstones are removable and can also be worn as earrings.
